While you wait

Five things to do before the crew arrives.

  1. Stop the water

Turn off the isolation tap under the sink or vanity, or the main at the water meter near the front boundary. If the hot water system is the cause, switch it off at the switchboard.

  2. Kill the power to wet rooms

If water is anywhere near power points or the switchboard, turn off the affected circuits. If you would have to walk through water to reach the board, leave it and keep everyone out.

  3. Photograph everything before you move it

Wide shots of each room, close-ups of the source and the water line, and the contents where they sit. Your insurer will ask for these and they cannot be recreated later.

  4. Lift contents clear

Furniture, rugs and boxes off wet carpet. Foil or blocks under the legs of anything you cannot move. Do not use a household vacuum on water and do not run fans on Category 3 water.

  5. Keep clear of contaminated water

If the water came from a creek, river, sewer or toilet overflow, do not wade through it and keep children and pets out of those rooms until we have assessed it.
